Six Detrimental Habits Hindering Your Business Success

May 06, 20242 min read

If you've been tirelessly working on your business but aren't seeing the financial results you expected, it's time for some introspection. You might be constantly thinking about your business, spending money on numerous online programs, networking extensively, yet the revenue remains elusive.

Does this scenario resonate with you?

You believe you're doing everything right, yet your business remains stagnant. The solution might not be in doing more, but rather in changing your perspective and potentially doing less.

A few years ago, I found myself in a similar situation. I had transitioned my successful offline accounting and tax services business to an online coaching service for entry-level and emerging women entrepreneurs - this was before I niched down to working with virtual bookkeepers

Despite my passion and belief in my work, I wasn't seeing the revenue and profit I expected. I realized that my problem wasn't a lack of effort or resources; it was that I was adding too much to my plate when I should have been subtracting.

Here are the six critical behaviors I eliminated to turn my business around:

1. Waiting: Stop waiting for the perfect time, idea, financial situation, or personal circumstance. There's no ideal moment to launch your product or service. Most business ideas aren't entirely new; they're often iterations of existing concepts. So, start now, with what you have.

2. Hiding: Building a strong business requires visibility. You need to share your authentic story, even the parts that make you uncomfortable. I overcame this by creating a supportive community, The Bookkeeper Basecamp™ on Facebook, where I could be my authentic self.

3. Worrying: Worrying about the future is futile. Instead, focus on what you can control. Create a roadmap and plan for your business, but don't let worry consume you. My mantra is 'worry cancels faith.'

4. Comparing: Constantly comparing yourself to others is a surefire way to undermine your confidence and progress. Remember, external appearances can be deceiving, and likes or hearts on social media are not a measure of success.

5. Faking It: The 'fake it till you make it' mantra is a trap. Authenticity is key in business. Be honest about where you are and what you offer. Authenticity builds trust and lasting relationships.

6. Making Excuses: Excuses are barriers to progress. Whether it's time constraints, financial limitations, or the quest for perfection, recognize these as excuses and confront them head-on.

To help you move beyond these behaviors, I've developed resources like the 'Money Map Workbook' and a list of 'My Top Five Favorite Apps' to manage your business efficiently. It's about taking small actions, being authentic, connecting with others, and being accountable to yourself. You can find these and other resources in our FREE Bookkeeper Basecamp Content Hub.

By eliminating these six behaviors, you'll be better positioned to grow your business effectively. Remember, it's about action, connection, authenticity, and accountability.
